I have a question about bar 28. We have been dancing this dance over the last few months after being taught it at our last day school. Are the turns for 1L/4M & 1M/4L clockwise or anti clockwise? My natural inclination has been for clockwise turns but quite a few of our dancers felt that as the pass would have been left shoulder, it would be more natural to turn anti clockwise. Hi Wouter Re your question of the turns in bar 28 of Land of the Heather hills - we always turn clockwise. As you dance round the ends of the reel it feels right to flow into the two handed turn as you meet the other person. Actually I can't imagine doing a two handed turn anticlockwise. We like this dance, although we've only done it with our more experienced dancers. Mary Kent UK

Dear Wouter, We also dance the two-hand turn clockwise. Like Mary Quinton, I can not imagine dancing it in any other way. The movement is the same as at the end of the reels of four in "Fifty Years On" - Book 43, # 1. Barry Priddey's original instructions are - ". . . . , but 1C & 4C, instead of passing left at the end, turn with both hands once round, . . . . ". The default for a two-hand turn is clockwise, and, since no other information is given, I would turn clockwise by default. In fact, dancing a two-hand turn counter clockwise feels most awkward. I actually do not know of any dance which specifies a counter clockwise two-hand turn - although some fiend probably has devised one! For those of you who enjoy 'swap-over' reels this is a most enjoyable dance - one of the first dances with such reels.
