Briefings and Encores

A short anecdote:  some years ago I was at a dance in Britain; I
didn't know a soul; I arrived sans program but with shoes and a
complete set of  little books in ghillie bag.   Never have I been
more popular!   Was the male-to-female ratio unusually high? 
Was it my charm?  My pretty face?  Elegance?  Charisma?   No! 
The dances were not briefed!   I had gentlemen charging across
the room to consult with my little books, and perforce they had to
ask me to dance!  What fun!

On encores:  it sounds like it's gotten out of hand in your location.
 I've rarely seen more than 3 or 4 encores at any given dance.
