To Marjorie McLaughlin's list of books and articles, I would add another by Hugh Foss that both gives some historical research, going back before Playford briefly, and discusses different approaches to evolution and recreation. He suggests at least 4 ways of approaching traditional dance forms: collect and freeze the dance as it was at some golden age, collect and develop, revive a golden age, recreate history. He suggests the RSCDS has done all except freeze, and in his discussion of the Society and of the future evolution of SCDing is surprisingly positive about the objectives and methods of the Society, given the frictions Marjorie summarized. The pamphlet is: Foss, Hugh (1973). Notes On Evolution in Scottish Country Dancing. Dumfries: S. & U.N., Ltd. I purchased my copy from TACBooks, but it is not listed in their current catalog. It may, however, still be available from them or the Scottish National Dance Co. in Reading, GB.
