Visitors to dances

Could I ask all you who organise dances / balls etc - Would you normally 
expect to get more than the odd one or two people who just turned up 'out of 
the blue'?   If I am going to a dance I make a 'phone call before I attempt to 
go - firstly to make sure there is a spare ticket, secondly to get the 
programme and thirdly to see how 'posh' the dress is expected to be.  Am I in 
a minority here?

I am not trying to be difficult / arguing with what Alan says, merely asking a 
question.
