Hi,

to those who have done this dance in the dim and distant past, in the so
called "flight figure" the instructions read: "Men... (come) in to a
quick left shoulder /whirl /with the other two men before
continuing....". The way I see it, this "flight figure" is simply
Schiehallion reels for 3, but what is this "whirl" thing? Is it a quick
pass in the middle or is it a twirl in the middle before continuing?
To those who know me, no prizes for guessing which version I prefer.....
:-D

Thanks in advance

Andrea (fae Dundee)

Dear Andrea,

It is many, many years since I last did this dance. However, it does
stand out because of the 'Schiehallion reels for 3'. We certainly
did not dance any extra twirls.

To my knowledge, the dance has never been formally published so a
number of different versions of the instructions may be 'floating
  about' with slightly different wording.

I do not know you Andrea, but, I do hope you you prefer the straightforward pass.

  Regards,

  Iain Boyd

I can confirm that it was never formally published

I know Andrea is not averse to the occasional whirl!

I have replied to both Iain and Andrea with a scan of the original
instructions which were given out at the club in Beckenham by the
devisors 45-50 years ago. Well, it seems that long!
The copy was rolled off on a blue-inked copier and is rather faint in
black & white but the colour version takes a while on my non-
broadband connection!.
The amazing thing is that after repeatedly looking for the
scrap of paper for years my wife came upon it only last week among
some bits she was about to throw away!
If anyone is interested in a blurry black and white Adobe copy
I can oblige.
Incidentally it is so early in the dances history that it is given
as a 3c/48bar/Reel or Jig !!
Happy Dancing :)

Wasn't it published in The Reel?

Hi Andrea,

I remember doing this for a SUSCDF Dem once - ironically, I think it
was a Dundee one! I'm sure there weren't any 'twiddles' involved.

I can't remember for definite, but I think you start the reels with
either the men or the ladies all in the centre. Do you pass left
shoulder and go to your left? (ie backwards Schiehallion reels) The
resultant passing (almost like a wheel without hands) might be
  referred to as a whirl?

  Hope that helps,
