The first one is
"The Seagull" from Book MMM2

THE SEAGULL (J8x32) 3C (4C set)
       MMM 2
1- 8 1s turn RH, cast 1 place, turn LH & cast to 3rd places
9-16 3s+1s dance 1/2 Poussette within the set, set to 1st corners, set to
2nd corners & 1s end in centre facing down (Lady on Mans left)
17-24 1s+3s circle 4H round & back
25-32 2s+1s Promenade

The problem is in bars 9 to 16. I have checked it with the original
description and is the wording is the same...

If 1st and 3rd C dance a half poussette, the 3rd C ends on the opposite
      sides.
The circle doesn't change them back....
Also the 1st couple doesn't really look to the first corner or anything
      nearby after the half pousette....

So I think this 1/2 poussette is danced a little bit different.
But how?

The second one is
"The Bookworm" from Dunedin 4

THE BOOKWORM (R88) 3C Triangular set
      V Sennet Dunedin Bk 4
1- 8 All circle round once to left, advance into centre & turning inwards
      dance out to places
9-16 1s cast away from each other to dance reels of 3 (Man LSh with 3s &
      Lady RSh with 2s)
17-24 1s dance reels of 3 with other couple
25-32 1s & 3L+2M adv to change places 1s dancing under arch made by 2M+3L,
repeat with dancers in 2nd position dancing under arch made by 1L+3M
33-40 Repeat with dancers in 3rd position dancing under arch & casting to
right back to original positions, all set to partners & turn RH
41-48 All Dance Grand Chain ending with Ladies in centre facing partners
49-56 All set & ½ turn RH, Ladies dance clockwise 1 place into centre while
partners follow them to next place on outside
57-64 Repeat to 2 3 1
65-72 All set & ½ turn RH, all chase clockwise to partners original place &
½ turn RH to end with Ladies facing out for…
73-88 All dance Schiehallion type reels through 3 positions but giving RH
across in centre & turn partners RH

The problem here is in bar 25 to 40
We tried a lot of variations but could not get the couples to a proper
place without changing sex and/ or partner....

Does anybody have the original description and can help us?

We haven't tried the rest of the dance yet.... So if there is another Trick
we would be glad to know it....

Thank you,

Anja

Anja,

I will leave the Dunedin dance to the members on the list but for the
Seagull, the Manual offers:

This is a poussette in four bars, as described in Chapter 6

That gives:

6.19.4	Poussette in four bars

This formation is danced within the set. At each turn the man pulls with
his right hand.
Steps 4 setting steps
No of bars 4

Bars

1 Both couples dance away from the middle, 1st couple towards the man’s
side,
2nd couple towards the woman’s side and dance a quarter turn.
2 All progress and dance a quarter turn, moving into the middle.
3 All dance a half turn.
4 All dance backwards to own side line, having changed places.

Anja,

Jim Healy has answered the question about The Seagull.

I have taught and danced The Bookworm and find it a great dance.

Your problem is that the crossings are four bars each and then CROSS with
your 'partner' to meet up with a new person. i.e bars 25-28 1s cross under
the arch and cross so that 1L goes to the left and 1M goes to the right.

Tha actual wording is "1st couple join nearer hands and dance under an arch
made by 3rd lady and 2nd man to change places with them, 1st and 3rd ladies
cross in front of 1st man and 2nd man respectively and cast to new places
....."

Again, this shows the problems of trying to do dances without the full
instructions!! There are some great dances in the 4 Dunedin Dance Books. Why
not buy them?

Anja
The half poussette is danced as described in the Manual except that in this
dance the first couple advance to corners on Bar 12 while the third couple
fall back to side lines.

And also in Book 5 which is a final collection by the late and much-missed
John Bowie Dickson.
