Friends,

Patty & I would like to express our sincere condolences to all of our
Commonwealth friends on the death today of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
She was a tough old bird - and I mean that with the utmost respect - and a shining
example of the power of the human spirit. Would that we could all live as long and
as well.

Sincerely,

Lee

G'Day, All,

I endorse that, particularly as it brought back memories of my mother, who
was very proud of the fact that she was born on the same day. My mother died
some 25 years ago and it has always been my regret that I could not get to
her funeral from Australia. It also revived memories of a childhood in the
UK through the war years and the trials and hardships that Elizabeth and her
family led us through. A weepy day for me, who cannot remember having cried
for a long time.

On a brighter note, it also brought to mind the fact that, next year, I will
become a 'golden oldie'. I first came into contact with SCD in 1953, while
serving out my National Service in Catterick Camp. Does anyone else remember
dancing in the Church of Scotland Canteen on Tuesday(?) evenings then? I had
a 30 year break afterwards until taking up the dancing in Australia in 1986.
The Sydney Branch is celebrating 50 years this year, so I almost completely
contemporaneous with that.

Brian Charlton,
Sydney, Australia.

There is an early 20th century photograph in the book "Tak Yer Places" of
James Neill, fiddle in hand, with the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and her
younger brother David. It was taken at her family home, Glamis Castle, where
she was born, and she looks around 10 years old at the time of the photo.

The Queen Mother fondly recalled her old dancing master who she remembered
as kindly but strict.

" As far as his "county" puils were concerned he would be asked to to teach
the family to dance, for instance he was asked to teach the Bowes-Lyon
family to dance."

"Take Yer Places" contains lots of photos from the Scottish Traditions of
Dance Trust Angus Collection.
