RE: Scottish dancing - improvise and freestyle

Jan. 31, 2006, 10:08 a.m. (Message 43982, in reply to message 43971)

Andrea - what you are talking about is embellishments of formations I think,
not 'freestyle' - freestyle SCD seems to be choreography of whole dances set
outwith the 'traditional and expected' boundaries. The difference is as you
explained - you did not now your partner was going to do something,
Free-style is planned ahead for the whole dance. Embellishments are fine -
as long as one doesn't forget that there are 7 other people in the set whom
you just may ruin the dance for - especially if your embellishment goes
totally wrong.

It is an areas which is interpreted differently by groups who carry out
this - For example I have seen kids in Jazz-costumes and a lot of glitter do
SCD and Highland mixed together. And I have seen some students from Glasgow
some years ago put on a 'show' of Dante in the Underworld (I think)which was
done at a students' ball and was the best demononstration of what you can do
if you have ever been taught SCD. Peter Hastings - you were there too.
