Evelyn's Joy

June 25, 1998, 7:34 p.m. (Message 12456)

Here is a dance I choreographed to honor the memory of Evelyn Swindle, a
wonderful teacher and dancer in the San Gabriel Valley Branch. Although she
was not well known outside of this area, she was beloved to us and her
untimely passing has left an empty place that will not be filled. Evelyn
was a joyful person and her joy for SCD was irrepressable. It is a snapshot
of that joy that I have tried to capture in this dance, but to gain the
full impact, it is imperative that you use the music "Weel Done Cutty Sark"
on _Burns Night in Annapolis Valley_. I must acknowledge my dear friend Ann
Skipper (Dances of an Island Clan, and If the Ghillie Fits) who married
this music to this dance. I have been slow to publish the dance because we
are planning to combine it in a book with several other dances devised for
Evelyn. You may think of this "pre-publication" as advance payment for your
helping me with my other posting requesting on the music...

EVELYN'S JOY
A 32-bar Reel for 4 couples

Devised by Oberdan Otto

1-8:	Couple 1 with Couple 2 and Couple 3 with Couple 4, dance
Right Hands Across and Back with the Left, into...

	9-16:	Couple 1 with Couple 2 and Couple 3 with Couple 4,
Poussette (couple order is now 2143).

17-24:	Couples 1 and 4 (middle couples) dance Right Hands Across
halfway and Set; then Couple 1 dances a half figure of eight beginning
crossing down between 3rd couple as Couple 4 dances a half figure of eight
beginning crossing up between 2nd couple (couple order is now 2413 all on
own sides). Finish with Couple 1 slightly inside the setlines facing up and
Couple 4 slightly outside the setlines facing down.

25-32:	Couples 4, 1 and 3 dance a half mirror reels of three,
beginning Ladies 4 and 1 passing right shoulders and Men 4 and 1 passing
left shoulders (couple order is now 2314). Couples 1 and 4 dance mirror
turns 1-1/2 times to change places (ladies with the left hand, men with the
right hand; couple order is 2341).

		Repeat, three more times.

In memory of my friend and fellow teacher, Evelyn Swindle, whose joy of
dancing was irrepressable. I loved dancing Poussette with her because we
barely seemed to touch the floor.

Suggested Music: "Weel Done Cutty Sark", 4R32, on Burns Night in Annapolis
Valley.

I hope you like it.
