RSCDS-SGVB ~ Blue Muumuus & Flowered Prints

June 8, 2006, 7:06 p.m. (Message 45471)

Should you plan to be in Southern California in August...

It's time to mark your calendars and make ready those blue muumuus and
assorted Hawaiian garb for the one time each year when flowered prints and tartan
plaids blend in perfect harmony. It's once again the San Gabriel Valley
Branch's annual

*Anahola is a small town on the northeast coast of Kauai.
*Ala Moana is the district of Honolulu between downtown and Waikiki.  It has
long been the location of a large well-known shopping center.
*Woodlawn is a residential district of Honolulu upstream from Waikiki and
below Sugarloaf.
*Pali means cliff in the Hawaiian language.
*Muumuu is the loose traditional Hawaiian dress originally designed by
missionaries to cover what they deemed excessive native female exposure.
*Sand Island separates Honolulu Harbor from the Pacific; on it are a state
recreational area and a Coast Guard base.
*Poi is the traditional Hawaiian staple made from wetland taro roots; dryland
taro is used for fried chips.
*Queen Liliuokalani was the last reigning monarch of Hawaii as an independent
kingdom.
*Haole means Caucasian in the Hawaiian language (all of whom or whose
ancestors are of course relatively recent immigrants); wahine means woman ("lass").
*The nene, a.k.a. Hawaiian goose, is the state bird.
