>But, Marjorie's initial reference to the Stan Hamilton and another >to the Berkeley Players plus queries about Jimmy Blue and Peter >White make me wonder - Strathspey MP3 swap-shop, Anselm?? I am in the process of converting my SCD music collection to mp3. Conversions of CDs to mp3s is very easy: just put the CD in a let it rip. A lot of my collection is on vinyl and tape however, which is more arduous to capture. AND there are some very old out-of-print albums for which I have tapes but have never been able to locate an original vinyl. I am fortunate to have one Peter White vinyl, but the others are tapes only and all of my Jimmy Blue's are tapes only :((. For tapes that do not have vinyl backups, there are missing tracks and incomplete tracks. Some of those tapes were recorded from over-used vinyls and are very poor quality. I would be VERY interested in an mp3 exchange for out-of-print material. I am sensitive to the issue of copyright, but tracking down copyrights and obtaining permissions is a huge task that I would not recommend. It occurred to me that an out-of-print mp3 pool could be set up to which anyone could freely contribute but for which there would be a nominal charge (say, $1, or $.50 or 50p) for each mp3 downloaded. Who would manage it is unclear, but TAC which has taken on tasks of a similar magnitude comes to mind. Perhaps the download site could just keep track of how many items a person downloaded and invoice them annually. What would be done with the money is also not clear, but perhaps it could be a compensation fund for cases where copyrights could be traced or maybe it could be a musician scholarship fund or a loan fund for the production of new CDs. Even though I am planning to operate from mp3, backup for all this music is essential. My preferred backup is the original music CD. Even though I have his 5 albums on vinyl, tape and mp3, if Stan Hamilton should ever re-release them on CD, I would be first in line to purchase them. I hope there is other interest in a facility of this sort. Cheers, Oberdan. 184 Estaban Drive, Camarillo, CA 93010-1611 USA Voice: (805) 389-0063, FAX: (805) 484-2775, email: xxxxx@xxxxx.xxx
