Jimmy Shand's Bands

Message 4547 · John Wood · 14 Aug 1996 22:16:16 · Top

The recent and on-going thread in regard to Tim Wright's band prompts me
to ask about Jimmy Shand.
Maybe in earlier months this thread may have been broached before. If so,
perhaps someone could tell me where to find that information.
Otherwise, as his was really the only band that I knew of and could get
recorded music of when I started out in SCD (apart from TW), I am anxious
to get some history about the famous Jim.
Looking forward to some one's input on this.

There is a biography: _Jimmy Shand_, by David Phillips (pub. D. Winter & Son
Ltd, 15 Shore Terrace, Dundee, 1976). It's the worst-written book I've read
in a long time, but does have a lot of information in it, including a big
discography. Shand deserves better than that, though.

I was at the Auchtermuchty Traditional Music Festival last weekend, and I
think I saw Jimmy Shand in the audience at one of the concerts (miserable-
looking old git, but if Phillips's account is right, getting him to smile
at anything was a very rare event - he just wasn't the outgoing type).
