Many years back I found all of the Marie Boehmer books at the TACBooks shop
at the AGM at a bargain price $1.50 each. 23 x $1.50 = $34.50 - not a bad
investment. I'd heard the name but was not familiar with any of her dances,
but at least I'd have a complete collection (thus sayeth the librarian). To
date I can recall having taught/danced one - The Sassenach's Pleasure from
Book 1 - which was recommended by a fellow dancer.

That's not to say I've done any extensive evaluation. I am somewhat
embarrassed to note that, until I pulled them off the shelf as a result of
this inquiry, I had never realized that in Book IV she recounts a 1982 trip
to California during which she wrote two dances dedicated to her visit to
San Diego. Perhaps we should try them out; I'm guessing no one currently
dancing her remembers the visit, nor the dances.

To answer Sylvia's question - Marie Boehmer taught in the Kitchener-Waterloo
Branch and her books date from 1979 - 2000. With an average of 22 dances
per book that's over 500 dances, but few seem to have reached any degree of
popularity. If there are some gems hidden within this prolific output, I'd
be happy to be enlightened.

And Peter - I have a duplicate of Book 1 which I'd be willing to send to you
so you can begin your own evaluation!

Iain,
Small investment? I have purchased over 220 books/3,500 dances. Buying
nother 35 books/ 450 dances to cull 7 good ones is too expensive in
ime as well as money. Rethink your knee jerk reaction please.
I have been teaching SCD for thirty plus years and I have not heard
ne rave about her dances, seen one on a ball or a workshop. In saying
hat I get the sense I should avoid her dances. But I could be wrong
nd someone's expert opinion could change my mind.
So I ask again - Do you have an opinion on the quality of her work? Is
he any good or just a local flash in the pan?

I get a little tired of dancers and teachers trying to get something for

I admit that there are now so many books of dances available, but, a small
nvestment every now and then over a period of time will ensure that even the
eanest will end up with a sizable collection.

Oh really, Iain!

Even if the topic is not exactly about making "mistakes", I cannot help
thinking of what Bismarck is supposed to have said:

"Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the
mistakes of others."
