In the Pretoria Branch's Many Happy Hours book (2007) there is a reel by
the name of Friends for Reel (page 33).
I am wondering whether there many be a misprint in bars 29-32...or else I
am missing something myself. The last 16 bars are a "square reel." As
best I can tell this is simply a continuation of the Bratach Bana reel concept
such that instead of dancing only two half reels, one on the side, one
across, and forming a curvy "L," essentially two sides of a square, this is
then continued on for another eight bars so that all four sides of the square
are completed. Indeed a footnote states:
"The square reel of six forms a Celtic knotwork pattern. Each dancer
reels the whole way round the square. First couple dance round each of their 4
corners in turn anticlockwise round the set, passing corners alternately
by the right shoulder and the left shoulder."
Okay, so...
17-20 [½ reels of 3 on own side] states (among other things): "1st couple
pass right shoulders with the dancer in 4th corner position."
21-24 [½ reels of 3 across the dance]: "1st couple pass left shoulder
with the dancer in 1st corner position."
25-28 [½ reels of 3 on opposite sides]: "1st couple pass right shoulder
with the dancer in 2nd corner position."
29-32 [½ reels of 3 across the dance]: "1st couple pass left shoulder
with the dancer in 1st [sic?] corner position."
"First couple finish in second place on own sides.".
Is that a misprint in bars 29-32?...shouldn't it be that 1st couple passes
left shoulder with the dancer in THIRD (not first) corner position?
Assuming that I am correct about the misprint, if someone happens to have a
corrected copy (if one exists) of which you could send me a .pdf or Word
.doc, I would much appreciate that.
