Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments.

My summary would be that there is no general proscription;
rather there is general agreement that the practice is
smiled upon when helping an uncertain partner.

In other circumstances each dancer is free to choose his own
compromise between increased sociability on the one hand and
adhering to the distinctive character of the dance on the
other.

I shall continue to make my own choice, probably being quite
inconsistent, and apologise in advance to those who would
rather I had chosen differently!
