RSCDS Starter Kit:
A quick trawl through the 'Core Dances' list on the RSCDS Web site reveals
that it has 111 dances on it. Of these, 16 are indicated as being sourced
from elsewhere.
RSCDS books cited include:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
7, 9, 10,
11, 12, 13, 14,
16, 18, 19, 20,
21, 22, 23, 24,
26, 27, 29,
31, 32, 33, 35, 35,
36, 37, 28, 39,
41, 42, 45,
Four for 78
Five for 65
Five for 82
Leaflets
Miss Milligan's Miscellany
Presumably, the society owns the copyright for all these, and could
re-publish both the music and instructions in digital form with no issues.
The following 16 dances/authors are also cited in the list
Postie's Jig Collins
Highland Rambler Collins
Mairi's Wedding Collins
Trip to Bavaria Collins
J B Milne Collins
Irish Rover (The) Cosh
Cherrybank Gardens Drewry (Bankhead book?)
Blooms of Bon Accord Drewry
Duchess Tree (The) Drewry
Moray Rant (The) Drewry
Ian Powrie's Farewell to Aucherarder Hamilton
Macdonald of the Isles Haynes
Black Mountain Reel Haynes
Bonnie Annie McNab (might be in the McNab dances book published
by the society?)
Flight of the Falcon Priddey
Johnnie Walker Robson
Presumably the copyright for these might be more complicated.
I'll try to look at the music side of things in more detail when I've got a
little more free time.
If this is something that the society wants to go ahead with, I'd be happy
to offer some volunteer labour for scanning, mp3 encoding and CD authoring
to a finished ISO image.
best regards

Well, as that particular idea only occurred to me this morning, forgive me
for not having written to any RSCDS committees yet. I do have to put in a
few hours of honest work every so often :^)
Also, I happen to know that, among others, the Convenor of the RSCDS
Membership Services committee subscribes to this list. One would expect a
person of such exalted status, not to mention uncommon intellect, to be able
to take in a fairly detailed outline of an idea, together with half a dozen
messages in support from people all over the world, and, in due course, put
1 and 1 together without additional prodding in the form of letters on
paper.
This is not to say that we should count on a message expressing full
committee approval within 12 hours (or even a week) of the posting of the
original proposal, but there's nothing wrong with bouncing this idea around
for a while on this list and *then* writing to the Society committee(s) if
they haven't yet acknowledged having seen it.
Seriously, this is such an obvious and straightforward thing to do that one
wonders why Membership Services didn't think of it themselves after coming
up with the »core repertoire« list. An obvious explanation (which may be
wrong) is that, in the view of the Society, dance teachers are expected to
have a full set of RSCDS books and CDs, anyway, which they will have
acquired on the way to their certificate exams, so the list is merely a
suggestion as to which of the books to look at to find interesting dances to
teach. However, it is an unfortunate fact of life that not all budding
groups are in the happy position of having a certified teacher with all the
books and CDs, nor are all budding SCD teachers in the happy position of
having ready cash to the tune of a couple thousand quid to blow on dance
books, CDs, exam fees, Summer School charges and travel costs to St Andrews.
In my opinion it would not hurt at all if we (the Society) did something for
the low end of the SCD teacher »food chain« for a change. If we can earmark
50.000 pounds a *year* for an »executive officer« to *perhaps* get the
Society back on track, we should for *sure* be able to earmark a one-time
outlay of 3.000 pounds (a generous estimate) for a project that would
probably do more for spreading SCD in far-away places in two weeks of
volunteer effort than an »executive officer« could achieve in half a year of
full-time work. *Especially* seeing as we would have to sell only 200 of
these CDs at £30 each for the project to more than pay for itself.
If getting things done in the Society is really that hard it shouldn't come
as a big surprise that we find it difficult to fill vacant committee posts.
One cannot blame likely candidates for apparently preferring to spend their
free time on less frustrating and strenuous pursuits, like, kicking dead
whales along the beach.
