While we're talking technical French, if you (Martin or anyone) do
use »authenticated« SMTP (with an username and password), make sure you also
use an encrypted connection -- otherwise your user name and password will
very likely be sent across the wire in the clear, and this will provide an
opportunity for assorted bad boys (and girls) not only to listen in to your
message traffic (they get to do that anyway, in particular if they're
three-letter-acronym government agencies) but also to pretend to be you on
other occasions. Especially if you're one of those lazybones who use the same
user name and password not just for your e-mail, but also for your iTunes
downloads, Amazon account, online banking, access to »adult« web sites, etc.,
