The obvious way to solve the encore signalling problem is to issue a
beeper-like device to each dancer as they enter the hall, which can be
conveniently clipped to a belt or tartan sash. at the end of a dance,
participants can press a button to indicate their desire for an
encore.

They are then free to clap loudliy, stomp, whoop and holler, or not,
as the mood takes them, and the emcee will be able to judge from the
number of encore votes whether to rerun the dance. Of course, other
functions could be added to this communications device such as request
the music to speed up, slow down, or perhaps to indicate one's set is
not complete.
