CD's vs, cassettes

For what it's worth, I believe that the recording industry (that
nortorious friend of recording artists) considers it "fair use" to make
one copy of a CD on tape for use in your car or other portable, personal
use. They would not, however, consider using the resulting tape in a
paying performance or concert to be fair use. Where does a paying class
fit in this range?
