Is Hollin a phonetic spelling of Holland?
What is the origin of the title of this dance?
In the past, it has been mentioned to me that Hollin Buss refers to a holly
bush, although there are no notes accompanying the published dance to
confirm this.
Another interpretation was suggested to me recently, by an American friend
who had visited the Fisheries Museum in Anstruther in Fife. A herring buss
was a boat used by the Dutch in the 17th and 18th centuries, in a style
copied by the Scottish fishermen with a little persuasion from the
government of the day who paid them a bounty to do so.
Is it possible that the dance is named for these boats that put into fishing
ports on the East Coast of Scotland during the herring migration? And that
the dance is named after a "Holland Buss"?
More info at the National Maritime Museum website ( search for herring buss)
Any thoughts anyone?
