The 'weem' in Pittenweem refers not so much to underground houses as to the
nearby coastal caves. Since these have been inhabited (off and on) for
thousands of years, the two meanings are even closer than they might at
first appear. There are also caves near Weem in Perthshire which, just to
drag this back on topic is one of the ancestral homes of Clan Menzies.
