To all those who devise and publish Scottish country dances:

As many of you will no doubt recall, there have in the past been numerous
discussions on this forum about the ethics and legality of posting the
instructions (whether full or as brief notations) of dances, unless they
were devised by the person posting. I would strongly suspect that the
majority of dance devisors are more interested in their dances being
enjoyed by as many dancers as possible than they are in trying to control
copyright. However, since by law all such works are automatically
copyrighted, the consensus on Strathspey has been to take the conservative
approach and refrain from posting dance instructions in such a public
forum.

I recently learned about a tool which I think could be very useful in the
Scottish country dance community: Creative Commons licenses. Creative
Commons licenses are freely available licenses that allow creators to
publish works with *some* rights reserved. Instead of falling back
on the standard copyright protections that reserve *all* rights,
Creative Commons license provide an easy way for the creator of a work to
publish it under terms that, for example, grant anyone the right to
use/re-distribute/perform the work as long as they attribute the author
and the use is for non-profit purposes. Creative Commons offers several
different types of licenses that the author can choose, so the above was
just an example, but I would imagine that this would be a typical
scenario under which a dance devisor might like to publish dances.
Under such a license, the author still reserves the right to for-profit
uses.

There is much more information available at
http://www.creativecommons.org. I would be very interested in hearing
what others think. It seems like something that should be promoted within
the SCD community.

By the way, Lydia Hedge and I have been conducting a a very interesting
discussion offline about the feasibility of musicians releasing recordings
of SCD music under Creative Commons licenses, so there are multiple ways
in which Creative Commons might be a useful tool for our community.

So all you dance devisors out there . . . what do you think? Would you be
interested in publishing dances with a (cc) instead of a (c) at the
bottom?
