I can second this as an effective recruitment tactic. Membership in the
Twin Cities Branch (Minnesota, USA) has grown in the last 5 years from
about 60 to over 100. I believe this is in part due to the fact that we
are very inclusive when it comes to performances. Most of our new
dancers who wish to are performing with us after only about 9 months of
classes. While we continually strive to improve technique, we generally
invite dancers to perform with us (at least at our more informal,
outdoor performances) if they can reasonably execute the formations, be
in the right place at the right time in the dance, and do a reasonable
fascimile of the footwork. We nearly always include an audience
participation dance. We all carry cards with the branch's contact
information, web address, and the date of our "bring a friend night" on
them to give out to the people we get up to dance with us (or anyone who
asks).
