I agree with Ian. The "reply" feature allows most of us to direct our
discussion contributions (I almost wrote "inputs" :-) right back to the
discussion. I (and I suspect a large number of contributors) am used
to (read automatically) sending my contributions directly by using
"reply". That is true of most of my e-mail correspondence. I am neither
embarrassed nor offended by the occasional personal message that gets
inserted. Usually, the self-imposed embarrassment on the sender is
sufficient to keep them from doing it again for a long time. I have
been guilt of that offence once or twice, but it's a small price to
pay for making the administrative overhead of joining a discussion
as small as possible.
