This is such a wonderful dance, which I learned at the time of, as
Marjorie McLaughlin says, "the legendary C. Stewart Smith" and I'm sure
I'll always dance it that way.

That is, 1L starts by crossing down through centre and finish by
crossing the top of the dance to original place by bar 8, while 1M
starts by crossing the top and finish by crossing up through the centre
to original place by bar 8.
If the man makes a wide track to return to place as the lady crosses the
top at the end of the first reel, it becomes, in my opinion, a
wonderful, parallel entrance into the second reel.
I find it a most enjoyable part of the dance, even if I may be in the
minority.
Because we now have so many dances with "mirror" cross over reels, which
are so smooth, I think many dancers try to dance the Cadgers, "parallel"
reel in a similar way, but I don't think that they are similar at all.
So long as you and your partner are dancing the same way it will
continue to be great fun.
