When I've been in a similar situation (joints that scream "Not this
dance!") I look for someone who sits out quite a few and ask that person
if I can sit out this dance with them. Then if I'm asked, I can say that
I'm sitting it out with ____. Seems to make the refusal less of an
affront.

What each dance floor needs is a corner where the "i'm sitting this out"
dancers can sit.
