Hanny said : "Our local international folk dance group, once thriving, is
barely limping anymore. Currently contra dancing - always to live music -
and to some degree swing dancing
is where the crowds are dancing."

The same situation is true here in Asheville NC - the contra group regularly
gets over 100 people, sometimes close to 150, while the Scottish group
fluctuates between 5 and 10 - we have not seen two full sets of dancers in
months. And you know what amazes me? The almost total lack of contact
between the two groups of dancers. Currently I'm the only person who attends
both contra and SCD even semi-regularly. I've talked up contra to the
SCDers, and I've talked up SCD to the contra dancers - even going so far as
to wear my kilt and ghillies most weeks to contra - and not a single soul
has "crossed the line" to try the other side. I wonder why?

One thing I notice is the less-than-high regard each side holds the
other...contra dancers tell me SCD dance is too uptight and does not allow
for freedom of expression; some SCD dancers feel contra is too loose and
rowdy. I enjoy both traditions - and I wonder why so few other people do
here?!
