I highly recommend jazz shoes or jazz boots for dancing outside or on
uneven or harder-than-usual surfaces. The lace-up boots (they have
split soles and are made by Capezio) work particularly well for our
performances at the Minnesota Renaisasance Festival because they have a
somewhat "period" look to them and are much more comfortable to walk
around in all day than any other danceable footwear I've found.

I have definitely found, however, that I get bruises on my ankles from
the heels when I close in third. This mainly happens in skip change
and strathspey (I've never had a problem with pas de basque). It
sounds like there may be some models where the heel is designed in such
a way as to minimize this problem, so it may be a good idea to try
dancing a few strathspey or skip change steps in a pair you are
considering before you decide to buy. Because of this bruising
problem, there is a tendency to not close all the way in 3rd and the
quality of the steps can suffer if one gets in the habit of
compensating for the heel. In general I'd say go ahead and wear them
for longer events where comfort and endurance is paramount, but for
demonstrations or demo classes it may be better to wear
ghillies/princess pumps.
