Just a couple more thoughts about Finale, after reading Elke's comments:
-- one *great* thing about Finale is the variation possible in staff size and
"note allottments" (the physical space assigned to notes of different time
values). I have different templates set up for reels, jigs, strathspeys, and
waltzes (and, actually, another one for reels with very few notes), and a
touch of a key plus mouse click spaces the notes exactly as *I* want
them spaced (not someone else's idea of how they should be spaced.)
-- the combination of note allottments, staff size and note font size means
the music can be exactly the size you feel most comfortable reading, and
you have (different from many other programs) complete control over the
number of measures which appear on one line.
On the down side, there are a few things Finale forces me to do "by hand",
which I hope they clean up in the future: just little fix-ups that take
multiple
mouse clicks to accomplish. I understand, though, that Finale in combina-
tion with a program called ProKey (which allows you to record keystrokes
and mouse clicks for playback) takes care of this nicely (I haven't yet
invested in ProKey....)
I'm not sure Finale is worth the full price (around $700) for this kind of
application -- it's made to allow for *very* complex scoring, etc -- but it
*is*
worth the "educational discount" price of about $300.
