Llyn -

Are you sure that no amount of rest will cure your tear? I hate to say it,
but maybe 6 weeks just wasn't enough. And with an injury serious enough to
keep you off the dance floor for several weeks, you really need to be
careful coming back. The muscle will be weakened, especially in the area of
the injury, and it will need to be strengthened slowly if you don't want the
injury to recur. Our dancing, being up on the toes all the time as well as
all the hopping without putting the heels down, is very stressful on the
calf muscles.

I would suggest that you get yourself off to a sports medicine clinic -
first to assess the injury, then to prescribe therapy to help you heal the
injury and then get the calf back in shape for the activities you enjoy
(i.e. regular sessions with a physiotherapist). And when you start back
dancing, start by walking the dances! Without being sure of the nature of
your injury, I think you might find the strathspey to be a good strengthener
IF you only do them when you're good and warmed up and IF you start by
eliminating the hop and just lift the heel slightly as you pull through. Or
not even that until you find the calf will support you in controlled
situations. And do them flat-footed to begin.

Good luck!
