While it seems it would be impossible to get someone through Irish Rover,
that is just what several Scottish ladies did for me at Princes Street
Gardens some 11 years ago - a partner and I got up, and when the rest of
the set realized we didn't know it, they broke us up and everything went
fine. (It was a couple of years before I really learned it).
On that same trip, our tour had set up a dance at Blair Castle (Alastair
Fraser playing beneath the portrait of Neil Gow, and Muriel Johnstone on
piano!) and lots of people showed up at the dance with no idea what was
on the program. I watched these Scottish dancers get out on the floor
and, in many cases, pick up the dance from watching the first couple.
I think they teach SCD a bit differently there. At least, the coping and
helping skills are impressively well developed!
