I would agree that passing LS would be the natural route. RS would involve
travelling much further and would be more awkward. The LS route also
follows the "correct" 1/2 reel track much more closely, since it just
finishes the 1/2 reel a bit early.
Having said this, I must confess that I haven't danced this (or much else
for that matter) in ages, so I might well be wide of the mark.
