Eric,

Harry Ways and I are looking at the same 1948 publication. It's true,
the Hebridean Weaving Lilt doesn't call for "gay remarks", but it's only
one of "Four Set Dances as collected by Mrs. Mary Isdal MacNab of
Vancouver and given to the Society at their 17th Summer School at St.
Andrews". The leaflet includes:
The Hebridean Weaving Lilt (An Figheadh Dannse), Macdonald of Sleat (in
which the comment "whisper some gay remark" appears in the instructions
for bars 113-120), Rouken Glen, and The Shepherd's Crook.
