I've seen this before, and I still disagree with the conclusion. I
think the explanation is quite simply that we don't pay attention to
the little words, which gives the effect illustrated by the following
pretty picture:

PARIS
IN THE
THE SPRING

Of course, since you're looking out for the catch, you'll notice both
'the's, but I have had to make people put their finger on each word in
turn to get them to see it.
