It seems, that the presentation of "THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL OF =
IRISH
AND SCOTTISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND DANCE" in this attachement was not =
on the
list and also not on the schedule of the Celtic-Circle until now.=20
So I like to post it to the list because I think that anybody in =
striking
distance of San Benedetto Italy might like to know of this.

PRESENTATION

The International Summer School of Irish and Scottish music and dance =
is a
cultural festival set up with the intent of spreading and highlighting =
the
Irish and Scottish artistic heritage by means of daily workshops of
traditional music and dance. The observation of various important =
festivals
successfully held over quite a number of years in Ireland and other =
European
countries led to the idea of its creation. While representing a strong
didactic point of reference, the Summer School's goal is to offer
possibilities of intense cultural and artistic exchanges as well as
entertainment and fun.

The festival presents high-standard music workshops held by Irish, =
Scottish
and Italian traditional artists, concerts of Irish and Scottish =
traditional
music and exhibitions of musical instrument's handicraft. Furthermore =
there
are stands offering a taste of typical food and displaying handcraft of =
both
the Celtic and the Italian local cultures.

The festival is held from June 21st till 25th, 2000 in San Benedetto in =
Alpe
( near Forl=EC ).The location is well-known for its suggestive abbeys =
founded
by Benedictine monks in the ninth century, as well as for its unique =
and
beautiful environment and the reliability of the up to date services
offered. Local accommodation consists of a Youth Hostel, 2 Hotels, a =
Camping
and a Horse-Racing Club with a total capacity of about 400 beds. There =
is
also other possibility of accommodation in characteristics B&B's farms =
and
cottages in the neighbouring village and towns. In the local restaurant =
is
possible to taste some of the typical Italy's best food and drink.

The town is located on the border of the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste
Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna (National Park of the Forests =
of
Casentina, Monte Falterona and Campigna). Its territory extends itself =
for
about 36.400 hectares and includes some of Italy's largest and best =
kept
forests. The wealth of its fauna and flora is of considerable interest.

People who love practising sports have an option of alternating the =
music
and dance workshops with gorgeous outings on horseback, on foot or by
bicycle on routes suggested in the Park.

THE FESTIVAL'S ORGANIZATION AND EVENTS

The music and dance workshops will be held from June 22nd till 21lth on =
the
premises (such as class-rooms, gyms etc.) put at the Summer School's
disposal by 'the Commune of Portico- San Benedetto. They will start at =
10
a.m. and finish at 6 P.m. with a two-hour break at lunch-time. They are
estimated to register an average total of a hundred students.

The workshops will be held by Irish, Scottish and Italian =
artists/tutors
living up to high technical and didactic standards. In February the ECS =
will
sift through the collaboration proposals forwarded in order to assure
quality standards meeting those of similar foreign projects.

The music workshops will be held by the tutors in English, in this way
participants will be (indirectly) stimulated to learn or improve- the
knowledge of their spoken English. For those participants having =
difficulty
with the language will be assisted by interpreters of the international
cultural centre of Portico thus assuring due assistance. In order to
facilitate the participants coming from other European countries the =
ECS
Organization will arrange a proper interpreter (Italian, French, =
English) at
the festival centre. At least 5 workshops will be held out of the =
following
traditional artistic/musical disciplines (dance certainly being =
included)=20

=09

* accompaniment (guitar, piano)=20

=09

=09

. The final selection of the workshops held will be made based on the
estimated number of registrations for tile various disciplines at the =
end of
March. The workshops will last 6 hours a day and thus make up a total =
of 18
hours for the whole week

The workshops' students will be divided into groups of similar =
technical
capacity ( the groups being beginners', intermediate or advanced =
level).
This will be based on the information given by the participants at the
moment of their registration.

To facilitate the course of the workshops each group will hold no more =
than
10 students and the workshop will be held on the premises put at =
disposal by
the Commune of Portico as such as basic facilities (such as =
blackboards,
chairs, etc.). All teaching material required for an efficient course =
of the
workshops will be put at disposal by tile organisation - excluding the
musical instruments needed for attendance which will be brought along =
by the
students.

Participants will pay for their stay, room and board. However, the ECS
association will cooperate with the local tourist bureau and arrange =
for a
special offer in order to facilitate the workshops' students (more
informations will be available on the dedicated internet summer =
school's web
site) . The offer will include meals and boarding in facilities in and
around San Benedetto (this regards the camping and the youth hostel in
particular).=20

The festival's secretariat coordinating the organisational and =
supervision
will be located in a suitable office in San Benedetto put at disposal =
by the
commune of Portico.=20

The office will have some facilities, between that an official =
Internet-site
for the mailing and the internet access during all the festival's days. =

The secretariat's staff exclusively consist of ECS- members and will be
supported by the presented by the local promotion committee..

Altogether the ECS association's staff will consist of about 15 people
artists included - composed of 5 ECS association members (the =
president, the
general secretary, secretary/interpreter and two helpers) 8 foreign
artists/tutors (in course of selection) and 2 Italian artists/tutors =
(in
course of selection).

The evening sessions will take place in the local pubs and caf=E9s of =
the
village suggested by the local promotion committee. Being spontaneous =
music
performances, they will be carried out by the artists in total =
independence
under the artistic direction of the ECS association. Therefore they =
require
no fee for the artists on behalf of the managers running the caf=E9s,
restaurants, pubs, hotels etc..

The organisation will first take the responsibility of sifting, through =
the
demands of the local managers who intend to make use of this aspect of =
the
festival. It will examine the transport facilities, the capacity of the
premises as well as the offers of sponsorship to the organising =
committee
with an eye to the festival's. The concerts will be held on the =
premises
considered suitable by the commune of Portico. They may require =
tickets,
which - if necessary- will serve to cover the expenses for the =
organisation,
the facilities (such as power amplification system where needed) as =
well as
the premises put at disposal and the artists' fees. Should it be =
thought
suitable the concert may also include participation of both foreign and
Italian traditional groups. In case those groups be selected by the
according to their relevance to the festival and their technical =
artistic
and economic characteristics. The ECS association will only be =
responsible
for the artistic production of the concerts. The logistics, security =
and
prevention on the premises will need the cooperation of the local
institutions, who will organise themselves accordingly.

PUBLICITY, ATTENDANCE, LOCAL PROMOTION COMMITEE

In addition to the attendance estimated for the workshop an increase in =
the
number of tourists will be stimulated by an adequate publicity campaign =
over
the radio, television, Internet and in specialised magazines and =
newspapers
etc. The extra attendance may be induced by the organisation of evening
concerts and mass events (both free of ticket and not) for people who =
do not
attend the workshops.

An influx of about 700 people a day is estimated based on the success =
of
similar events recently organized (such as Festivals, concerts of =
Celtic
music etc.) as well as on the fact that the location is close other =
places
attracting mass tourism (such as Rimini). On Friday, Saturday and =
Sunday an
increase in the number of people staying and boarding in San Benedetto =
is
estimated, which could possibly exceed 400 people (200 of which =
directly
connected to the workshops). The total average influx for the entire
festival is estimated to be around 2000 people.

Considering this possibility and in order to obtain the maximum results =
to
the festival's promotion a number of initiatives and cultural events =
other
than the artistic ones foreseen will be organized by the local =
institutions.
These may include exhibitions and stands displaying typical local =
product
etc. and may be set up in the neighbouring villages for reasons like
spreading the crowd.

The planning and local organization of the festival be run by means of =
the
creation of a "local promotion committee. Together with the ECS =
association
it will take on the responsibility of organizing and attending to all =
the
logistic aspects required for an accurate preparation and unfolding of =
the
festival.

This committee will consist of a representative of the local =
institutions
(such as the mayor or his delegate), representatives of the local =
tourist
offices and promoters and of the Public Board of the Park. This =
committee is
set up by the beginning of January 2000 in order to guarantee in due =
time
the organization and the scope of the local facilities required for the
festival's unfolding.

In Fact for reasons of dimension and specialization the ECS association
cannot attend to any of the organizational aspects (except those =
regarding
the project). It has to primarily concentrate its efforts on the
organization and supervision of the cultural, artistic and didactic =
aspects
of the festival.
