The San Diego Branch classes operate, along with other dance clubs,
within the City Park and Recreation Dept in group called the
International Dance Association. This gives us opportunity for
insurance, but more importantly it gives us free rooms in Balboa Park.
However, due to an old city regulation, we are restricted to a $5 per
night "payment" to our teachers. The branch also covers mileage and
expenses, but to compensate a bit more for this ridiculous payment, we
are offered an annual sum to be used in the Branch bookstore, and an
amount to be spent attending a workshop of our choice.
No, not a living wage, but this hobby has offered me more wonderful
opportunities for travel and friendship than I could ever have imagined
and for that I am grateful.
Our Branch has also recently re-instituted the after-party idea after a
hiatus of a couple of years. It certainly does contribute to the
sociability and cohesion of the group, and this teacher's home is often
the scene of a late night get together. You could visit the McLaughlin
Dancing Master's Virtual Pub at http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/4755/
to see one of the locales of San Diego's frequent parties. No, I'm not
the publican, just married to him.
