The number of times through *was* the limitation on the 78 rpm
records. If I remember correctly it was from 3.5 to 4 minutes.
When I started dancing -- to 78 rpm records -- the norm
for the recordings was 6 times through for reels and jigs
and 4 times through for strathspeys. So for the reels and jigs
the recording was played twice, the first three couples dancing
twice through on the first playing. On the second time through
the fourth couple did the dance twice, followed by each couple
getting one extra turn.
