Cole asked about the Mairi's Wedding twirls (again, any out there who
disapprove, hit the Delete key now!).

There are at least two types:

1. Supporting couples (the corners for the working couple) can twirl (or
twiddle, as I call it) halfway through the half reel of four - when they
need to do the left shoulder pass, they pass left shoulder but also pull
right shoulder back to do a full pivot, then continue on their way. (Is that
clear? I'm having to dance it now in my office to picture it.) When I danced
in Oxford, the corners would sometimes also clap hands twice as they pivoted
and than slap hands with the other dancer as they came out of the pivot and
carried on the end of the half reel - though you had to be 'in tune' with
the other dancer to do this well and not just slap empty air.

2. Working couple can also pivot at the end of eah half reel, as they come
back in to the center to pass left (or right shoulders) - again pull right
shoulder back and carry on. This seems to work better when passing right
shoulders.

Needless to say you don't want to twiddle in a set where everyone does not
know Mairi's Wedding very well. In particular, doing #2 can really confuse
the corners, who are expecting to see a working dancer come their way but
instead sees the dancer pivoting first - causes that deer-in-the-headlights
look, so I rarely twiddle nowadays unless I know everyone well in the set,
know they know Mairi's, and know they won't mind a little cutting up.

So be careful of beginners in the set, don't confuse them. And beware of the
dance police. :)

inquisition!!" or whatever that Monty Python skit is.)
