I am not quite sure what you mean by "1st couple allmanding down the
middle on the last 2 bars" because the 1st couple would end face to face
(with both hands still joined in front of them) in the middle of the dance
at 3rd place (at the 2nd repetition) at the end of the bar 6 of that last
8 bars phrase. What we've done here in some of the demo and socials is to
have 1st couple (from the ending of the bar 6 described above)dancing down
the middle of the dance joining nearer hands (left hand for man and right
hands for woman) at the beginning, then to the own side of the 4th place
and 4th couple stepping up on the last two bars. Would this still be
considered "allemanding down the middle?"
Similarly, the 1st couple could end the Poussette at 4th place in a
similar fashion, if and only if the 4th couple is needed immediately in
the next round.
I agree with others that, when the 3rd couple (old 4th couple in the
previous round) is not immediately needed, the best way to the bottom of
the set in three couple dances at the 2nd repetition is to finish in 3rd
place and step down quitely in the first 2 bars of the new round. I really
don't like being strong armed (as old 1st couple) into the 4th place by
the 4th couple (say during end of the six hands around and back) or (as
old 4th couple) strong armed into 3rd place, when the new 3rd couple is
not needed in the new round immediately. Even if the new 3rd couple is
needed immediately, IMHO, it is not alway necessary for the old 1st couple
to cut the dance short in the last bars to vacate the place. In Maxwell
Rant, for example, the 4th couple could retain their partners right hands
(after 4 bars of right turn) in the middle in 4th place at the end of
the 2nd repetition and begin the mirror reel in the next round by leading
up towards the top of the dance, while the old 1st couple step down from
the sideline.
